Archangel suggests a wound type based on where the wound is located, wound exudate amount, and the wound bed type. You are given the option to select the wound type with this suggestion in mind.
It is very common for clinicians to assign the wrong wound type and this may result a variety of issues to include prolonged wound healing.
Therefore, it is critical to assign and confirm the correct wound type during the first visit with the patient and after a full assessment of the wound has been conducted. Archangel allows the clinician to fully document the patient wound and then provides suggestions of the wound type based on:
- Location of Wound
- Wound Exudate Amount (none, light, moderate, heavy, copious)
- Wound Bed Type (% presence of epithelial, granulation, slough, eschar, scabbed, blood blister, fluid blister, intact skin light, intact skin dark)
After you perform the first wound assessment, you are asked to assign the wound type. Wound types include:
- Pressure Injury/Ulcer
- Neuropathic Ulcer
- Neuropathic Ulcer-Diabetic
- Venous Insufficiency Ulcer(PAD)
- Arterial Insufficiency Ulcer
- Surgical Wound
- Traumatic(not skin tear)
- Skin Tear
- Ischemic
- Radiation Necrosis
- Pyoderma
- Neoplasm
Selecting a wound and assigning a stage/thickness happens near the end of the Assess step in the Archangel process flow(see yellow box below).

Let's take a closer look at the details for each part of how Archangel suggests a wound type and assigning a stage/thickness.
Part 1-Wound Location

Part 2-Exudate Amount

Part 3-Wound Bed(% of each Type)

Step4-Suggested Wound Types

Suggestions are based on the location, exudate and wound bed type tables below. You will also notice we suggest "Thickness/Stage" based on these same tables.
For example, based on Table 1 below, a wound located on the "Head and Neck Anterior" could be one of the following:
- Pressure
- Neuropathic
- Surgical
- Traumatic
- Ischemic
- Radiation
- Neoplasm
Table 1-Locations of the Wound

Continuing the example above, based on Table 2 below, a wound located on the "Head and Neck Anterior" with Moderate Exudate and with 30% granulation and 70% slough the wound type suggested by Archangel is:
- Pressure(stage 3, 4, or Unstageable)
- Neuropathic(full thickness)
- Surgical(full thickness)
- Traumatic(full thickness)
- Ischemic(full thickness)
- Radiation
- Neoplasm
